Mickie Kennedy

Sonnet with Eyelids and Frogs

The birds have quieted.
Frogs bubble forth croaks in hopes
of luring mates. Just a sliver of moon,
but it feels like enough. Beneath it,
I consider my place. My place

the harsh of morning. Coffee to brew.
A school bus noisily pushing the hill
in front of my house. No children here.
Not since time made them adults.

Still, I can imagine them small,
two mice in a glove in the snow.
They lie in their beds with their sheets
pulled tight, eyelids heavy,
like pockets filled with quarters.
