The Peaches

i.m. Louise Glück

Peaches are falling like snow
in the garden. I picture you
in your study, quietly
contemplating the many ways
a heart can bruise. How
delicate this perfectly formed
package is. How easy it
must be to accidentally wound
the contents with nothing
more than a tongue, a glance,
a silent room. The peaches
are gone. The tree had nothing
more to give.
